Brutalist House Interior – 2026 Practising my interior arch viz skills, I thought this would be a simple place to start… I was wrong. Getting the scale and materials right was more difficult than anticipated, and I’m still learning a lot about lighting.
The architectural finishes are largely procedural with some image texture elements, for instance the concrete utilizes layered noise for the diffuse and specular maps, basic shader math to generate the tie holes and an image texture for the micro-displacement details.
Post processing handled in Blender, with minor adjustments made in Photoshop afterwards. This project took two days.
The composition and framing are based on original photographs by Yoshihiro Asada and Norihito Yamauchi, the layout was inspired by Philip Moreton‘s excellent recreation of the same building (Tranquil House by FORM/Kouichi Kimura Architects).Beach House – 2025 After being amazed at the quality of renders produced by Maxwell and Company I sought out to pick one of their renders and see if I could approach the level of quality they had produced, so I picked one render at one angle and set about attempting to replicate the scene in Blender.
I used geometry nodes on the walkway to start with but couldn’t get the half landing to look right, after spending way too long trying to tweak my node setup, I ended up converting it to a mesh and fixing that up by hand which was a valuable lesson, that although I enjoy it, not every problem is a geometry nodes problem to solve.
I still haven’t internalised this lesson. Anyway the original render is better so go look at it here.Desert Walkway – 2023 This scene caught my eye when looking for inspiration, my goal was simply to match an original photo (by Joe Fletcher), there was a lot of tweaking to align/scale everything correctly and the copper panels went through many iterations. This took about a week of downtime.Elgin, Dining Room – 2024 This visual was for a house that had yet to be built, it was modelled from architectural plans. It was one of my first serious attempts at interior architectural visualisation, as before this I had focused almost exclusively on exteriors. I learned the importance of the small details like architraves, door frames, skirting boards, etc.
I went heavy on volumetrics and post processing like Michael Bay with a fog machine, also I overly relied on modelling most assets in the scene, whereas I could have saved time finding/purchasing more existing assets. This was about 2 weeks of work for 3 interior shots of different rooms.Model Apartments – 2022 Part of my job is creating models to aid the design process, for some fun I decided to mimic the paper card architectural model style here, I wanted to highlight the massing in more detail than we would typically do and also emphasise the green courtyard at the centre of the apartments. I used a tilt shift effect to give the appearance of a small scale physical model. This model went on to help inform the final design below.Dundee Apartments Composite 2022 The challenge here was integrating the model into a photo including the surrounding context, working with Street View images means you need to account for the 360 camera perspective in order to align the images properly.
I developed procedural bricks for this project because of the limited availability of brick textures online that match the specified brick, but also to cover large areas without repetition of textures. This was achieved using photos of the specified brick faces then sampling those per brick at random.Durieshill Visitor Centre – 2022 An early mock-up as part of the design process with architects for a visitor centre. I used geometry nodes extensively in this project, the dry-stone wall by the roadside, the telegraph poles, the light trails, the fence around the play area, the markings on the road/parking, it was a great opportunity to get used to modelling with nodes.Durieshill Visitor Centre Winter – 2022 After the above design progressed I thought it would be a nice challenge to do a winter scene version of the centre as Christmas approached.
